Academic Planning

Academic advising is essential to a successful college experience. The Academic Counselors provide students with a variety of resources to assist them in making informative academic decisions.

Admission

For the potential student, merely applying for admission to Madisonville Community College can seem like an overwhelming process. Whether you are a new student, transfer student, or returning student, there are three key things you will need to submit to the Admissions office as a part of the application process:

Placement

As a part of the application process, you will need to complete a test for placement. There are three tests that can be taken for admission: the ACT, COMPASS, or ASSET. The writing, math and general education courses you will sign up for are determined by your test scores. Academic counselors can assist you with interpreting your placement test scores.

Degree programs

As you apply to college you may have a degree program or career in mind. Perhaps you are undecided. Madisonville Community College offers three associate degrees in a variety of program areas. The Associate in Applied Science degree programs are designed to prepare you for the workforce. Short-term training in the form of Diplomas and Certificate options are also available in many technical fields.

Scheduling

After reviewing the degree program course requirements and consulting with an advisor / counselor about your test scores, you will be encouraged to look at a class schedule for the semester in which you wish to enroll. Your next step is to plan your semester schedule of classes.

Advising

All students will meet with an Academic Advisor / Counselor prior to registering for classes. Students will then be assigned a permanent advisor based upon their degree major they declared. This advisor will assist students as they plan their course schedule and encounter other academic issues throughout the semester. A student's assigned advisor may change if the student changes his / her major.
