December 8-19

Library hours remain the same for exam week, December 8-13 (8-8 Mon-Thu, 8-4 Fri, 9-2 Sat). We've hired a new library assistant: Martha Majors! She will begin in January. The library will be open 8-4 during the week of December 15th.

December 1-7

We will be interviewing for the library assistant job this week. Hopefully we will have a new employee in place in time for the next semester.

November 24-30

The Scholastic Book Fair will continue from Monday to Wednesday, so please visit us in the library and buy some books. Poetry Aloud will be held on Tuesday, November 25 in the library at 6:30, so come by and read a poem or feel free to just listen.

The Library will be closed Thursday, November 26, Friday, November 27, and Saturday, November 28 for Thanksgiving Break. Happy Thanksgiving!

November 17-23

For the second year in a row, the library will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair! The Book Fair will be set up in the Loman C. Trover Library all week long and next week until Thanksgiving, so please drop by and offer us your support. Books make great gifts!

November 10-16

I will be in Somerset for the Kentucky Convergence 2008 conference on Thursday and Friday of this week. This is a conference that focuses on technology in the classroom and libraries. Please contact Cherry Berges if you need to book instruction while I am away.

November 3-9

On Thursday, November 6, the Fall 2008 Loman C. Trover Library Reading Series will take place in the library, and it will feature two Northern Kentucky University writers: Stephen Leigh and P. Andrew Miller. Both authors focus primarily on fantasy and science fiction writing, and they will be sharing some of their stories with us. Scott Vander Ploeg from MCC will also be reading some of his work. Please join us, at 7:00 in the library. The authors will be available for questions and book signings, and refreshments will be served. As always, it is a free event open to the public, so be sure to check it out.

The libraries will both be closed on Tuesday, November 4 for Election Day.

October 27-November 2

There will be a Poetry Aloud session on Tuesday, October 28 at 6:30 in the library. All are invited to attend.

October 20-26

The search is on for a new Library Assistant, replacing Daniel Dowell who has moved to California. I have been named chair of the search committee. Candidates are asked to submit their application by October 22.

The first Poetry Aloud meeting of the school year will be Tuesday, September 23 at 6:30 pm in the Trover Library. All are welcome to attend.

KUDOS is Friday, September 19th, at 2:30 in the Trover Library. All Faculty and Professional Staff are invited to celebrate the promotion of: Jude Roy and Dr. Mary Werner, (both promoted to Professor); Andrea Deal, Darlena Gallegos, Elyssa Lear, Lisa Lee, Michael Rager, and Lynn Whitledge, (all promoted to Associate Professor). Refreshments will be served afterwards.

Last week I was very busy working on upgrading the learning units of the MCC Libraries eCommunity. You can access the eCommunity by signing up for it in Blackboard. The course ID if you would like to join is "MadCC2007." The learning units teach you about some of the services that the library offers.

Hopefully I will have some potential social science books lined up by the end of the week for faculty to comment on in the collection development section. Don't forget that if anybody needs instruction, please let me know.

On Wednesday, July 30, we will be meeting with a representative from the Best Books Company, where we will likely spend some money on some new books. They represent some of the smaller university presses in the south so this is an opportunity to get some books that we wouldn't normally order otherwise. May 19-June 1

Last week I attended a Critical Thinking Short Course in Dayton, Ohio. It got me thinking about library instruction at our college and some ways to improve it. This week we will have two intersession classes coming in: ACE2 will visit us for a tour, and Biology 135 will visit for an orientation. The Biology 135 class will be participating as a library focus group. More on that later.

May 12-18

Reduced hours begin this week (M-F 8-4, closed weekends). The libraries will be closed on Tuesday, May 13 for Professional Development. Most of the library staff will be in Paducah for the West Kentucky Community & Technical College McNet Conference. I will be in Dayton, Ohio for a Critical Thinking Short Course from Monday until Thursday, May 15.

May 5-11

On Wednesday, May 7 at 6:30 pm in the Trover Library, there will be an awards reception for the writers and artists whose work will appear in the 2008 Gadfly publication. Refreshments will be served, and all are invited. The library will be open during its regular hours all week long for final exams (Monday-Thursday 8-8, Friday 8-4, Saturday 9-2).

April 28-May 4

$2000-worth of April books have now been ordered for the Social Sciences. Look for announcements as they arrive in the coming weeks. We'll have to wait to see if there's going to be enough money to order the other $2000-worth at this point. I offered to split the list in half so we could get some other things paid this month. The rest of the books will be ordered this fall if they aren't ordered now.

April 21-27

The final Poetry Aloud reading of the semester will occur on Tuesday, April 22 in the library at 6:30. Come and read a poem or just listen. All are welcome.

April 14-20

On Thursday, April 17, at 7:00 pm in the Loman C. Trover Library, we will welcome Murray State University poet Ann Neelon to the library for this semester's Loman C. Trover Library Reading Series, along with MCC English Professor Greg Hagan. Free refreshments will be served and Ms. Neelon will be available to talk and sign books. It should be a very entertaining event so please come and check it out. Free to all.

April 7-13

A list of new social sciences books is now available here. This includes all new books that have been added to the new books shelf since December. I will be ordering the remaining books for the 2007-08 year this month. Please send me any requests for books in the social sciences.

March 24-April 6

On Wednesday, March 26 at 7:00 in the Library, we will welcome P. Andrew Miller, a Kentucky author and teacher from Northern Kentucky University, who will read some stories and poems, and answer questions about his work. (Mr. Miller was originally scheduled to appear back in February but then one of those ice storms made that impossible.) Refreshments will be served, and admission is free. Free snacks, free Andy. See you there.

March 17-23

Last week we received our $800 shipment of free books from Scholastic that I ordered using the Reward Vouchers from the November Book Fair. These will be on the shelf in the coming months, since there are over 200 items that will require processing.

March 10-16

The books that were ordered in January arrived this week and are already being processed. I will let everybody know about their status as soon as I have the information. I am very busy with instruction this week but over Spring Break I'll be focusing more on the collection.

The furniture was installed on Friday and I will be using the newly renovated room for instruction beginning this week.

February 18-24

We are supposed to be getting our shipment of new furniture for Room 213 sometime this week. I hope it will be installed by Spring Break. Social Science Faculty, please look at the book reviews for your discipline that I've posted in the Collection Development section. Have a great week!

January 28-Feburary 10

Last week our shipment of Dell laptops arrived. We are now waiting on final renovations to Room 213, but the Laptop Lab in Room 213 should be up and running by the end of February (about five months ahead of schedule). If anybody is interested in scheduling an instruction session for ENG 101, it is suggested that you book it for March or later. This way I will be able to incorporate the laptops into the tutorial portion of the lesson, as part of the Library's Information Literacy goal to increase Active Learning during instruction.

On Monday, December 17, I will be at the Health Campus for the Physical Therapy Assistant Program library orientation. It will be my first time doing an orientation session for Nursing and Allied Health.

November 5-11

On Tuesday, November 13, I will be giving a presentation about Canada in Room 303, John H Gray Building, at 12:20-12:50 as part of the Experience Culture Series at MCC. I will be speaking about some of the most notable differences between Canada and the United States.

On Wednesday, November 7 we met with two vendors from the Best Books Company and we purchased numerous new titles for our library. I will be posting a list of new Social Sciences books as they become available to you.

October 29-November 4

On Thursday, November 1, at 7:00 in the Loman C. Trover Library, we will be hosting the Loman C. Trover Library Reading Series. Kentucky mystery writers Kit Ehrman and Tim Williams will be the featured guests. All are invited. Refreshments will be served.

On Friday, October 19, we celebrated KUDOS Day in the library. Four of the faculty were promoted. Each of them got to add a commemorative book to our library collection. Marcella Davis chose Loud and Clear by Anna Quindlen. April Grace chose The Color of Water by James McBride. Angie Moser selected Assault on Reason by Al Gore. Dan Shultz selected Full Moon by Michael Light.

It's Fall Break! The October shipment of Social Sciences books has arrived and will be hitting the New Books shelf hopefully starting next week. I will be posting all new titles on my website as they are processed.

I will be away next week from Monday until Wednesday but I will be back at work on Thursday. Trover Library Hours next week will be reduced for Fall Break: 8 until 4, M-F, and we will be closed Saturday, Oct. 13.

I've sent my final list of books for September to Cherry and hopefully we will be purchasing sometime this week. I will let everybody in Social Sciences know when the books arrive sometime later in October.

I just got back from the Kentucky Library Association Conference in Louisville last week.

September 17-23

I will be in Louisville from Wednesday, September 19 to Friday, September 21 for the annual Kentucky Library Association Conference. It will be my first time attending. Most of the sessions I will be attending will focus on library instruction and technologies to use in the library, as well as how to collaborate with faculty. Fun stuff!
