Philosophy
A situational method of teaching is best for instructing students of all disciplines because each student has his or her own unique style of learning. Learning abilities must be assessed periodically and a teaching plan developed to meet the needs of both the individual and the group as a whole. Where some students retain knowledge visually by reading textbooks or utilizing PowerPoint handouts, others tend to learn better through auditory stimulation or lectures. Certain students prefer demonstration, whereas others enjoy hands-on activities such as case studies and a variety of interactive learning tools.Distance education is becoming a key factor in the education of college students at all levels of study. Many traditional students appreciate the flexibility web-enhanced curriculums bring to the classroom. The role and responsibility of the instructor is to facilitate and environment that is most conducive for learning using a variety of teaching styles and methods, while also acting as a mentor for the students. By encouraging participation in professional organizations, as well as maintaining an active role in community service, the instructor is modeling behavior that is characteristic of college faculty and a productive member of society and the nursing profession.
In addition, an instructor must be willing to further his or her own education in order to demonstrate the importance of expanding one’s knowledge and remaining current in the profession. Nursing is an ever-changing filed that requires continuous education; a good nurse should have this desire to learn new information in order to provide optimal care and education to our clients.
