What is Ready to Work?
Ready to Work is a partnership between the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. The Program is designed to promote the success of Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program (KTAP) recipients and Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF) eligible who attend Community and Technical Colleges.
The purpose of the RTW program is to provide students with counseling, referrals, and access to resources to help them succeed in college, find employment, and become independent of public assistance.
Students are eligible for on or off-campus work-study opportunities and may earn up to $2500 per academic year, working no more than 20 hours per week. Work-study students are paid by the RTW program, there is no cost to the participating employer. Completing a job application and an interview with potential employer are required.
How can Ready to Work help a degree-seeking student?
We can work with the college staff and faculty to help with:
- Assessing career goals and choices
- Completing all the Department of Community Based Services Verification forms (enrollment, employment, housing, income, etc.)
- Navigating the enrollment and financial aid process
- Connecting with advisors, instructors and counselors
- Advocating for special assistance on and off campus
- Finding you help with your classes on and off campus
- Meeting and networking with peers
- Conducting workshops and seminars on parenting, communication and job retention skills
You may be able to earn up to $2500 per year through Work Study. Your work Study income will not reduce your K-TAP check.
We will assist you in finding a job on or off campus.
We can help you succeed in this program with:

- The school supplies we provide... everything from pens and paper to scientific calculators and tape recorders
How can Ready to Work help a GED-seeking student or one who plans to enroll at Madisonville Community College?
We can help you succeed through the Work and Learn program by:
- Working closely with individual case managers to find the resources students need
- Completing all Department of Community Based Services Verification forms (enrollment, employment, housing, income, etc.)
- Providing school supplies... everything from pens and paper to scientific calculators and tape recorders
Students eligible to participate in the work-study component may be able to earn up to $2500 per academic year in either on or off campus job experiences. Your work Study income will not reduce your K-TAP check. You will be placed in job settings based on your major areas. We will assist you in finding a job on or off campus. A resume, job application, and interview with the potential employer are required.
What are the requirements for an employer to participate in Ready to Work?
- Must provide legitimate work experience. Though they do provide valuable experience, restaurants, convenience / department stores, etc are not considered as potential employers. Job duties such as custodial work , food preparation, gardening, etc. are also unacceptable.
- Must complete necessary application forms. Students and employers must complete initial work-study forms, including a job description and an off-campus agreement (if applicable).
- Must complete bi-monthly payroll forms. Students are require to track their hours and report those to the RTW office. Employers must be willing to monitor these hours and sign students' payroll forms. Unsigned forms will not be accepted and hours will be periodically verified by the RTW office.
- Must be willing to work around student schedule. The RTW work-study component is a supplement to student income and is considered secondary to academic study. Therefore, employers are expected to schedule work hours around the student workers classroom time.
